yes, because you have to have a pokemon that's quick enough to get behind it in the first place. attacking it head on means that your attacks will do less damage and status moves are reflected, so it excels and fails in two different areas.

mega sableye still wins these battles easily 100% of the time, while the normal sableye strategy banks on RNG to not only hit the thunder wave, but get the missed turns too. both forms exist to explore sableye's concept in different ways and to have their own battle niche which is why as a sableye fan, i'm happy with its mega evolution 🙂

Yeah it wins the competition about missing the whole point of the mon and the ugly award

it's pretty self explanatory how it functions against others in pokemon battles. if you're only able to attack its front side because you're slow/heavy to jump back behind it or you're a pokemon that uses status moves, mega sableye is really strong. if you are nimble enough to easily get behind it, then you'll make quick work of it. a blastoise firing a hydro cannon and a lopunny who can jump over it and kick its back are going to have a dramatically time facing off against it, and being a mega evolution, it gets to retain the advantages of normal sableye and only needs to become mega when it's absolutely necessary for it to succeed.

The whole point of the mega evos is that it pushes the pokemon to the extreme and often times hurts it, just read the dex entries. If they made it an actual evolution they could just get rid of the vent although I think it's fine
