Celebrating 206 years with BLM’s General Land Office! Over 200 years and 13 million records later. The General Land Office was created by an act of Congress on April 25, 1812. Eventually 179 land offices were established within the 13 Eastern Public Domain States, which generated numerous record files, such as plats, field notes, patents and tract books. In 1849, the GLO was transferred to the newly created Interior Department. The records were moved to the present-day Interior building in 1937, now housed with the BLM Eastern States. In 1946, the GLO was merged with the Grazing Service to become the Bureau of Land Management within the Interior Department. Today, the GLO records play just as important a role as they did 200 years ago. The BLM Eastern States GLO Records Automation Team scans, indexes and publishes thousands of records every year. The records are scanned at a very high resolution to create a digital archive of the records. Then, the records are indexed using a variety of fields such as state, county, name, year issued/surveyed, Public Land Survey System land description, etc. An image of the records, along with the data collected by the indexers, is then published to glorecords.blm.gov so that users from around the world can easily access these records. Today, the GLO website hosts over 13 million records and we continue to add new content daily. While digitizing the records collection, the GLO team often discovers special records that tie into th...
