A coworker shared with me: "I love your LinkedIn posts, but I'm scared to interact with them in case someone at this company takes it personally!" I've mulled this over for quite a few days. My initial thoughts were defensive: "Nothing I post is so outrageous!""That's such an outdated way of thinking!""If they take it personally, GOOD, then they needed to hear it!"(I have at least gotten good at pausing when I want to be defensive and take things personally myself) The truth is, it's not an outdated way of thinking. People are always watching everything, and anything you do can come back in one way or another. I have 40 years left in this capitalist haven/hellscape of a workforce. I'll be damned if I leave this workforce in the same place I entered it. I will always put my head down and grind. I will always prioritize my team and our goal. I will also always raise my hand when I have something to say. I will speak up when someone else at the table is being spoken over. I'm not speaking up out of hatred. I'm doing it because I know we can be better. I want companies to put people first, because people will make your company better. The whole world is one symbiotic relationship and all of us have some role to play. So- interact at your own discretion. Do what works for you. I will continue occasionally putting my foot in my mouth. And hopefully, somewhere, somewhen, we can make something a little bit better.

My largest team consisted of 48 people. Our work was inherently in-person, but ANY work that could be done from home, I encouraged for exactly this reason: let people work the way they want and they stick with you. ♥Measure results, not hours or location.

For today, I thought I'd share my current computer background: a collection of cheesy quotes reminding me to just. keep. going.

If you're not raising your employees' wages at the rate of inflation, they have taken a pay cut to keep working for you.

How your employees feel will be felt by your customers. Investing in...✅work-life balance✅proper tools and resources✅diversification and development of your team...directly translates to:✅a happy employee who greets every customer✅an employee who spends their time cleaning, stocking, and going above and beyond rather than fighting their tools or waiting on a loading screen✅an employee who makes their customers feel valued, just like they feel valued by their companyI promise, whatever money you think you're wasting on training, wages, and tools, you are making back five times over in sales and scalability. (and for those 'bad apples' who will waste time no matter what, having a company culture like the above makes it WAY easier to replace them and WAY easier to keep the good ones working for you rather than your competitor across the street)

It's 3:38pm on a Friday of a very BLAH week. Here's how I'm recharging this weekend: ✅ First farmer's market of the season ♥✅ Garage sale-ing✅ Long walks to the park with the kids! ✅ Scrubbing the dickens out of some floors (because I'm weird and this is the best stress relief I've found for me)What are you doing to let off some steam and recoup this weekend?

This morning, my 9 month old daughter pulled up on the bathroom step. She wiggled and giggled and cooed, immensely proud of herself. It might seem to some a small thing, just pulling yourself up on a step. But she has no inclination of what others think. She was just unabashedly, even unconsciously, proud of herself. She doesn't know the word "pride". She just felt it. And by extension, so did I. In my work, I tend to keep my head down and just grind it out task by task. When something goes well, my thought is "thank God, got through that. On to the next". Celebrate your 'small' wins. Just pick your head up for a second and be proud of that work. What you do matters.

This one's a bit personal, so if that's not your jam, scroll on. Today's reminder: Your words matter- even if you are speaking to an audience of one. In the beginning of a new position, my former supervisor casually asked her own boss, "how do you think she's doing?". That person responded, "she's good, but she dresses pretty frumpy". Now- putting aside the most blatant issues:1. As long as someone is dressed appropriately, it's none of your business whether that dress is in fashion or not2. The request was for a check on performance, not on attire...there is the issue of *why* I dressed that way.At that time, I did not have a home. I was living out of a couple suitcases at my mother in law's house trying to figure out a next step. I didn't need professional clothes at my former restaurant job. The things I wore to my new office job were the newest, most professional-looking things I could find and afford at the thrift store. I was already very self-conscious, knowing that my clothes were outdated and that I would dress a much different way if I had more money and a dresser. (And I'm lucky- I've always had a roof over my head, even if it's not my own. Many, many others are not so fortunate). That comment was my first impression of that leader, and it indirectly colored the rest of my interactions with her for the years we worked together. Even if you are speaking to one person, assume what you say will make its way around. Your words matter, deeply.
